Hi, I am a rising sophomore (Class of 2028) from Myanmar planning to major in Computer Science and Economics. After Wesleyan, I hope to purse a career in the Sports Analytics field. Working on this project, I have gained experience in the R programming language and designing a Shiny app, an interactive web app straight from R, and implementing an interactive map (using Leaflet) in the app, to help visualize the data. In my free time, I enjoy exploring world geography and learning about the Countries of the World.
Abstract: Understanding the global landscape of civilian gun ownership and its relationship to gun violence is crucial for informing effective public policy and promoting safety. This project examines international data from 197 countries spanning 1962-2024 to uncover key patterns and disparities in firearm prevalence, homicide rates, and legal frameworks governing gun ownership worldwide. The research investigates how civilian gun ownership rates vary globally, explores prevailing patterns of firearm homicide rates internationally, and examines whether there is a statistical correlation between gun ownership and firearm violence. Using comprehensive data from sources including GunPolicy.org, Small Arms Survey, and SIPRI Arms Transfer Database, the study analyzes average rates of civilian gun ownership and firearm homicide across major world regions during 2000-2023, while considering how geographical factors such as proximity to major arms exporters may influence these patterns.
